What is Upcycling?

According to the omniscient Wikipedia, upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value.

Upcycling is the opposite of downcycling, which is the other half of the recycling process. Downcycling involves converting materials and products into new materials of lesser quality. Most recycling involves converting or extracting useful materials from a product and creating a different product or material.

Last week, I stumbled across an article published in HomeBNC, 33 Artistic and Practical Repurposed Old Door Ideas, explaining that old doors can find new life as interior doors, freestanding room dividers, and even as rebuilt furniture and shelving.  We shared many of the article's inspiration photos on Facebook and also created an Inspiration: Old Doors photo album.  Lastly, we tagged several of the 100's of interior and exterior doors in our inventory at Discount Home Warehouse!  It was great fun to see how designers and customers have transformed salvage and are breathing new life into old items!

Feel free to check out our posts and Inspiration Album on our Facebook page!  Until next time...
